ESKMO RESONATES...

"I could die right this instant and it would be ok..."
Is what I said after I listened to and watched Eskmo's Cloudlight's video (directed by Dugan O'Neal).
It was one of those rare times when you happen to feel deeply connected to the sounds, the rhythms and the emotions they bring out.
Of course, after that, I had to check the whole album out to make sure it wasn't just a one-time thing.
The songs are unbelievably amazing. Period. They're so different from each other but so connected at the same time, which seems to be rare these days. But before talking about the album I should tell you who Eskmo is, if you don't already know.

Brendan Angelides, aka Eskmo, is an electronic music producer whose style/genre will not be defined by me. I don't think he has one really. It's up to you. He was raised in Connecticut, currently living in L.A. and released the eponymous album 'Eskmo' in 2010. On this record, he let himself get into singing a little bit more than before and it sounds delightful. Right now, he's working with NINJA Tune but his work has also been featured on Warp Records or Planet Mu. He's collaborated with Amon Tobin as Eskamon and released their first single 'Fine Objects" in 2010 as well, on Eskmo's own label, Ancestor. He says " [...] Creating my own label Ancestor has allowed a sort of freedom in the sense of no pressure or stress aside from releasing the music. [...] Ancestor has also allowed Welder to thrive without any attachment to outcome." (Itw Earmilk).
But who's Welder ? Well, it is the other "character" Angelides created in order to pursue a path Eskmo could not have taken without questioning from his peers, the audience and himself even.

So, Eskmo, the album. A masterpiece I must say. It's poetic and subtle but the bass, THE BASS ...is something he and I must have in common. It's always there and so strong. Not in the agressive kind of way, but more like, I pulled my heart out, sampled a few heart beats, turned up the volume to the max and I'm giving this to you to listen to, ...this is how I feel.. Enjoy !
All songs are their own thing but altogether they are even more powerful.

His stage performances seem to be as good as everything else he does. As opposed to some in the electronic area, not only does he mix, obviously, he also tears paper, opens up pop cans, taps on glass pitchers & more. He's really committed to making things interesting to watch, adding to the pre-recorded instrumentation.

And here's another one, from the album. Siblings.

I know, I'm not being very helpful on why you should listen to him, but I can't say much else. Eskmo is a huge discovery for me, I've been listening to him non-stop for the past week and I'm not getting sick of him. As for now, he is and always will be part of my favorites-to-go-through-life soundtrack.

WE GOT MORE video ! Great work by Cyriak Harris
